School Participation

For Schools & Educators

EBS welcomes students from Phillips Exeter Academy and partner schools. We provide everything students need to participate — no prior research program or infrastructure required.

Why Participate

What Schools Gain

EBS gives your students a structured first research experience that builds skills valued in college admissions, careers, and lifelong scientific curiosity.

First Research Experience

Students who participate in EBS gain their first substantive research credential — a presented, peer-reviewed biological study — before college applications.

Professional Connections

Your students will interact with and receive feedback from biologists, graduate students, and industry professionals — a rare opportunity at the high school and middle school level.

Scientific Literacy

The process of conducting and presenting dry-lab research builds skills in reading literature, data analysis, scientific writing, and oral communication.

No Lab Required

All EBS research is computational or literature-based. Your students can participate with a standard laptop and school internet connection — no specialized equipment needed.

Recognized Achievement

EBS participants receive a certificate of participation. Top presenters receive awards recognized by the Phillips Exeter Academy Genetics and Biotech Club.

Full Support Provided

From resource guides to organizing team support, EBS provides the scaffolding students need to succeed — so educators don't have to build a research program from scratch.

Common Questions

School FAQ

Most students spend 2–4 hours per week from October through May. The commitment peaks around abstract submission (March) and the weeks before the symposium (April–May). Students set their own pace — EBS is designed to fit around a full academic schedule.

Not required, but recommended. Students benefit from a faculty point of contact at their school who can check in on their progress and help with any scheduling needs. EBS provides academic support through its resource library and organizing team.

EBS aims to be free for all student participants. There is no registration fee. Costs related to travel to the symposium venue are the responsibility of participants. We are actively seeking sponsors to support stipends for any students who need financial assistance.

Yes. Students may submit collaborative projects of up to 3 students. Each team member must contribute meaningfully to the research and be able to speak to any part of the project during the poster session. All team members must be registered individually.

Yes. EBS does not restrict students from submitting their work to other science fairs or competitions. We encourage students to share their research broadly — EBS is designed to be a supportive first step, not an exclusive commitment.
